Beware of Comfort

Posted by in Uncategorized

When it hurts, when you’re tired and hungry and frustrated, that’s when the offer will be made.  The simple comforts will be rolled out on a silver platter, and they will seem like just the thing to get you through.  When you are running in a race and you push yourself and it gets really hard, there is nothing more temping than the thought of stopping to rest.  There is nothing more tempting than the thing that will make the pain stop, even if only for a short time. Here’s…read more

Nuance

Posted by in Uncategorized

A scientific world view, while quite useful when it comes to controlling and predicting the physical world we live in, can compromise our ability to appreciate, or even see, the most valuable things in life.  Jesus of Nazareth so often used seemingly trivial things to reveal the most profound truths.  Have you ever wondered why?  Is is just so all of us simple folks could understand it?  I don’t think so.  There is a whole world that he is trying to open up to us… a higher order world where…read more

Listening

Posted by in Uncategorized

“He wakens me morning by morning, wakens my ear to listen like one being instructed” – Isaiah 50:4b   I think listening to God is one of those things that many believers struggle with.  I certainly do.  I think that part of my problem is the fact that I have a false preconceived notion about the sorts of things that God says.  When you think you already know what God is going to say, or at least the types of things he addresses, you certainly can’t hear it when he…read more

Emergency Containment

Posted by in Uncategorized

Sometimes I feel like there is something rumbling deep within me.  I feel like a dormant volcano.  Sometimes I fear that I might burst and my inner self will run out and overflow the moat I have dug around my heart… so I keep it contained.  Don’t we all?  I dug the moat for purposes of emergency containment as opposed to protection from invaders. There are questions to be answered about our inner selves.  Our misunderstanding about it is problematic.  Sadly, it is defining our lives.

Desire & Conflict

Posted by in Uncategorized

Donald Miller in his book, “A Million Miles in a Thousand Years” tells us about how the elements that make a good story also make a good life.  According to Don the primary elements that make for a good story, and therefore a life worth living, are as follows; The character(s) want something There is conflict or difficulty in pursuing it Practically without exception through various experiences when we were young, we learned to avoid one or both of these elements (desire and conflict) like the plague.    Somehow we have…read more

Damage Control

Posted by in Uncategorized

“In navies and the maritime industry, damage control is the emergency control of situations that may cause the sinking of a ship.” – Wikipedia entry for Damage Control Do you ever feel like you live your life in damage control mode?  “Emergency” and “control” are the key words. Do we face any situations that really threaten to sink our proverbial ship?  I think of Jesus sleeping in the boat in the middle of a mighty storm.  He didn’t seem too worried and he was mad that the disciples got scared. …read more

Say Goodbye to Normal

Posted by in Uncategorized

Do your dreams involve living a normal life with normal relationships, a normal job, and normal habits?  Have you ever looked at the life of a normal person who is dead and gone and secretly hoped that you could trudge on to finish with that same kind of life?  Do the people who inspire you the most live normal lives?  I doubt it. No matter what your definition of greatness is, I bet it deviates drastically from normal.  I’m thinking that normal is the enemy.  If we long to live an…read more

You Get What You Seek

Posted by in Uncategorized

“It’s very important to know that finding is reserved for the searchers” – Jim Rohn “The one who seeks finds” – Matthew 7:8 You get what you seek.  You don’t necessarily get what you need, or what you really want, you just get what you seek.  If a comfortable place is what you seek then don’t walk with Jesus.  It seems he is all about leaving comfortable places behind.  We are most comfortable with the things that are familiar but he is leading us to a new place, a place…read more

Suffering

Posted by in Uncategorized

“The difference is not in what people suffer; but in the way they suffer.  In the same fire, gold glows and straw smokes.” St. Augustine I’ve reluctantly come to accept that suffering is part of the deal (not that I have suffered much compared to the next guy).  It seems to be a key ingredient in the process of redemption.  I think I’ve managed to ignore this fact for most of my life, as if I could be exempt.  I have been secretly searching for a hidden road that gets…read more

Change

Posted by in Uncategorized

Thank God for change… the death of the old and the coming of the new.  Why do we resist it so fervently?  God brings it to us gently most of the time.  It’s as if he is coaxing us through it.  It comes to us like that first cool breeze in late summer hinting at the death of one season and the coming of the next.  We can resist.  We can cling to what we know, what we’ve grown comfortable with, even what we love, but change is happening whether…read more
