Leave the Religious System Behind
Why is it that so many people find religion irresistible? How do we end up becoming so dependent on the system that we choose? I think it has to do with how uncomfortable we are with the unknown. Let’s consider the definition currently listed in the Wikipedia entry for “Religion”.
“a collection of cultural systems, belief systems, and worldviews that establishes symbols that relate humanity to spirituality and, sometimes, to moral values.” (Clifford Geertz, Religion as a Cultural System, 1973)
What we seek is a system that will relate us to all that we don’t understand. We want to make life more predictable. That is how we protect our hearts. That is how we hide. We’ll settle for the system that makes us feel most comfortable and turn a blind eye to its obvious flaws and inconsistencies. There are many to choose from. Science has been a leading contender for the very rational among us for quite some time. Its methodology seems so trustworthy… so logical. However, its laws have been changed a great many times throughout history in an attempt to address the glaring incompatibilities that develop with what we observe. It is a patchwork of laws and theories that are constantly being replaced as they become inadequate. Sadly, the “system” of christianity is no different.
You don’t need a system. You need Jesus. Jesus came and abolished all the systems. He came for your heart. He came for you and if you go with him you are in for a wild adventure. It will be unpredictable, but it will be filled with the life you were created for.
