How Does It Feel?
If you’re like me, in addition to getting to your destination in life, you want it to feel good on the way. Unfortunately, we don’t always feel good. We have to come to terms with this. We don’t always have peace and confidence. We aren’t always warm and comfortable and well-rested. We don’t always feel secure. Apparently Jesus expects us to be able to get past how it feels.
Think of Peter when he asks to come out of the boat to walk to Jesus. Jesus actually calls him out of the boat. Peter knows who Jesus is by now. He had just watched him feed the five-thousand. It is clear that Jesus is calling him to walk on the water, so he steps out of the boat. At first he was really doing it. It was working! It was really working! He was out there walking on water toward Jesus… WOW! It clearly didn’t feel like he expected it to feel. Peter started to feel uncomfortable. Something didn’t feel right about it. He was thrown off by how scary the wind was when he got out there. We should be ready for that moment. We all know it. Something in us is screaming at us, “run, run, freak out, you’re going to die”. That is when you just stay and wait… and look into his face. He is the one who brought you here. There is nothing to fear.
Jesus doesn’t make any promises about how it’s going to feel when we step out of the boat. He only assures us that he will be with us and therefore we have nothing to fear. Forget about how it feels and how scary it is. Keep looking at him and take another step.
Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?” – Mathew 14:29-31
