Democracies were surprised lately when they found that Russia had got ahead of them in science. What a delicious specimen of human blindness! If the whole tendency of their society is opposed to every sort of excellence, why did they expect their scientists to excel? – C.S. Lewis (Screwtape Proposes a Toast)
At bottom there is only one question we must answer with our lives. The universe will have our answer one way or another.
The question is, “what do you want?”
It does not require a specific answer. At first, a simple “no” or “yes” will do, as in, “No, I’m all set right now, thank you” or “Yes, I want something more”. If you’ve answered no, don’t worry, there will be many opportunities to change your answer. If you’ve answered yes then your journey is already underway.
It is excellence that we are after, all who answer “yes”, to excel in every way that we, as a person, were designed to excel. It’s just a daily choice. It matters very little the lot you’ve been given in life. That has been proven by a thousand disadvantaged runts, born on the wrong side of every line, who have gone on to leave an indelible mark on an incredulous world. Its just a daily choice.
We like to look at ourselves as the good guys. At least we have that going for us. At lest we live in a democratic society. At least we have the right religious doctrine. At least we are on the right side. We find great comfort in making just the right comparisons, in weaving a story that gives us permission to stay right where we are. Its still an answer.
As much as the publishers of business books would like you to believe it, there is no secret to excellence. The way of excellence is shared freely.
“I will show you the most excellent way.” 1 Corinthians 12:31b
Really? Its, written out for all to see? No secret 8 step process?
It is astounding just how optional it is. The most excellent way is only for people who are looking for the most excellent way… and they shall find it (Matthew 7:7). Its just a daily choice.
Choose it… for the sake of us all!
