An Inciting Incident
“Without an inciting incident that disrupts their comfort, they won’t enter into a story. They have to get fired from their job or be forced to sign up for a marathon. A ring has to be purchased. A home has to be sold. The character has to jump into the story, into the discomfort and the fear, otherwise the story will never happen.” – Donald Miller
We have become so good at preventing and avoiding inciting incidents that we all but eliminate any chance of entering a meaningful story. I believe that there is a frontier waiting to be explored in just about every area of our lives… in our relationships, in our work, in our own hearts, etc. All of this is tied up with God’s pursuit of us. I suppose we have our fallen state to blame for the fact that only painful disruptions can get us to embark on these adventures. Sometimes I can’t believe how I can be so thirsty and yet so afraid of the water. Thank God for the disruptions in your life.
