What About My Reputation?

Posted by in Uncategorized

“With enough courage, you can do without a reputation”  Margaret Mitchell   Actually, I think you are better off without the reputation.  In many ways the good reputation you’ve worked so hard to build is a liability.  It’s the reason you can’t afford to take the risk of speaking freely or creating something or taking the action you know in your heart you want to take. Isn’t it interesting that so many successful people attain their success after a string of epic failures.  Those failures are a gift.  They destroy…read more

Live Like a Hero

Posted by in Uncategorized

We all live in suspense, from day to day, from hour to hour; in other words, we are the hero of our own story. Mary McCarthy The marketers would have us believe that we are completely self focused and that we care mostly about ourselves… that we are the heroes of our own stories.  There might be a lot of truth to that.  But, if we are the heroes of our own stories, why don’t we live like it.  We live like it doesn’t matter. I think its because we don’t…read more

Invincible Summer

Posted by in Uncategorized

“When you have once seen the glow of happiness on the face of a beloved person, you know that a man can have no vocation but to awaken that light on the faces surrounding him. In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer.”  Albert Camus It’s amazing the affect that one person can have on another, the great potential that exists in human connection.  It is even more surprising how seldom we lay hold of that potential.  I just had a meeting…read more

No Alcohol for a Year

Posted by in Uncategorized

I gave up the consumption of alcohol for an entire year.  I decided not to have one drop for the whole year.  I didn’t even toast on New Years Eve.  Actually, the year started on Easter Sunday of 2014 so I still have a couple months left to go.  Its not like I was getting drunk or that I had some kind of addiction problem.  I was drinking one or two glasses of wine every night with dinner.  It was one of those things that I really looked forward to……read more

Rock the Mic

Posted by in Uncategorized

Waaayyyy back in the distant past (15 + years ago), the question for anyone who wanted to make a statement was a question of whether or not you would get a turn at the mic. “You only get one shot do not miss your chance to blow, this opportunity comes once in a lifetime…” It was up to the founder of the feast, the thrower of the party, the organizer of the show, the leader of the movement, the gatekeepers.  If you got your turn, the question quickly became, will…read more

The Song You Want To Hear

Posted by in Uncategorized

I was working on filling up my Amazon Prime music library the other day and having fun doing it.  I was pulling out all kinds of songs from my past by Bob Dylan, Simon & Garfunkle, and Pink Floyd  along with some newer songs from… Zach Brown, Pentatonix, and Eminem (I know he’s angry but dude’s got skills).  I’m amazed by all of the good music that gets created every year.  You would think at some point we would run out of room for more. Interestingly, I couldn’t quite satisfy myself…read more

Feeble Arms and Weak Knees

Posted by in Uncategorized

I imagine that there is a hope burning within you.  It may feel more like nagging uncertainty much of the time, but if you take a closer look, I think you’ll find that at its root it is a hope for something better paired with a question about whether that hope is unfounded. There is a place you’re trying to get to or at least a direction you wish to move in and you interpret everything around you as evidence in support of, or against, the hope that you can actually get there….read more

The Power of Belief

Posted by in Uncategorized

It’s been en vogue recently to publish books about how we, as humans, think and to make a lot of references to the building body of Psychological research that continues to grow at a staggering pace.  Malcolm Gladwell and Daniel Pink and Jonah Lehrer have all made valuable contributions and there are many others.  It amazes me how all of this work reinforces the power of belief. A couple key psychological principles uncovered over last century… Confirmation Bias – a tendency for people to favor information that confirms their preconceptions or hypotheses regardless…read more

Golden Sessions

Posted by in Uncategorized

Those are the golden sessions; when four or five of us after a hard day’s walk have come to our inn; when our slippers are on, our feet spread out toward the blaze and our drinks are at our elbows; when the whole world, and something beyond the world, opens itself to our minds as we talk; and no one has any claim on or any responsibility for another, but all are freemen and equals as if we had first met an hour ago, while at the same time an…read more

The First Sleepiness

Posted by in Uncategorized

“It was his last moment of fear. When he had recovered his breath and his control, he sat and thought about meeting death with dignity.  However, the idea did not come to him in exactly this manner. His idea was that he had been acting like a fool. He had been running around like a chicken with its head cut off. He was certain to freeze in his present circumstances, and he should accept it calmly. With this newfound peace of mind came the first sleepiness. A good idea, he…read more
